Waananga
(Programmes)

Our waananga focus on uncovering the root causes of abusive behaviours and helping whaanau understand the patterns that lead to unsafe environments and harm.

Change begins with awareness, and we encourage this process by guiding participants to examine their beliefs, attitudes, thinking, and behaviour. We assist in identifying triggers for violence and work together to develop strategies and solutions for managing challenges safely.

These waananga offer waahine opportunities to:

  • Recognise abusive behaviour.

  • Explore the causes and effects of living with violence.

  • Understand the impact of violence on children and family members.

  • Prioritise personal, child, and family safety.

  • Understand the causes of anger and abuse.

  • Rebuild their lives and move forward with confidence.

These waananga offer taane opportunities to:

  • Examine belief systems, unhelpful thinking patterns, and behaviours that lead to abusive actions.

  • Expand understanding of violence and controlling behaviours.

  • Identify and practise non-controlling alternatives.

  • Discuss the impact of these behaviours on women, children, and other men.

  • Rebuild trust with partners and create positive relationships with children.

  • Develop honest, open communication skills.

  • Build healthier, more respectful relationships.

  • Explore strategies and routines focused on stress reduction.

These waananga offer tamariki opportunities to:

  • Learn to recognise and understand emotions.

  • Build self-confidence and resilience.

  • Explore how to express themselves in healthy and positive ways.

  • Understand the importance of respectful relationships.

  • Gain tools to cope with the impact of family violence.

Our kaimahi support and advocate for whaanau affected by family violence, ensuring they have access to the appropriate services. They are committed to treating all whaanau with respect, empathy, compassion, and aroha.

When whaanau are referred to us, we help them explore the options available to access the services they need. Our services prioritise protection and accountability and help people reclaim their identity and culture, affirming their pathway to autonomy and positive change.

Our Whare provides a safe and supportive space for taane who have been issued a Police Safety Order for 5-10 days. During this time, we conduct comprehensive assessments, create tailored plans, and coordinate wrap-around services to support both the taane and their whaanau.

We are dedicated to addressing the underlying behaviours and beliefs of those who enter our Whare, offering high-quality interventions focused on lasting change and wellness. Rather than staying in crisis mode or relying on punitive approaches, we empower taane with the tools and skills needed to manage and regulate their behaviour, thoughts, and emotions.

Te Hau Mirimiri offers a safe and nurturing space where tamariki can express their feelings and experiences through play. This therapeutic approach helps children to:

  • Process difficult emotions and experiences in a non-verbal, creative way.

  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms and emotional resilience.

  • Build self-esteem and improve communication skills.

  • Work through trauma and anxiety in a supportive, child-centred setting.

If you or your whaanau need support, you can refer yourself to our services. Simply reach out to us directly—no formal referral is required.

Our kaimahi are here to listen, provide guidance, and connect you with the right resources to help you on your journey towards safety and wellbeing.
